Police Employment
The Division of Police offers a dynamic, challenging, and rewarding career in law enforcement with excellent pay and benefits. Police Officer candidates are required to complete a written exam, a physical fitness exam, and are subject to an in-depth background investigation. The top ranked candidates must then successfully pass an oral board interview. If a conditional offer is made, the candidate must then complete additional screening prior to appointment. Division officers are responsible for maintaining law and order, investigating crimes, and protecting life and property. In those capacities, officers must be able to give chase by vehicle or on foot, must be computer literate, use a two-way radio, and perform various administrative duties. In addition, offers must be able to interview witnesses, suspects and complainants, investigate accidents, direct and control traffic and crowds, transport prisoners, attend court hearings, attend training, prepare reports, deliver presentations, and develop proficiency with firearms. Candidates who wish to be notified of the next Police Officer hiring process can complete an application and will be notified via email or mail when a job vacancy is posted.

Communications Coordinator

The Communications Coordinator works under the supervision of the Division of Police in a call center environment, dispatching police, fire, EMS, and utility units to both emergency and non-emergency calls. The position requires availability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and unplanned overtime. This individual is responsible for operating a multi-channel public safety radio system, a multi-line telephone system, 911 communications system, numerous computer systems, including LEADS (Law Enforcement Automated Data System), recording and monitoring equipment, mapping system, and other standard office equipment. The Communications Coordinator is also responsible for maintaining the police records section, assisting citizens at the walk-up window, accepting fines and bonds, serves as a Deputy Clerk of Mayor’s Court and must be (or become) a Notary Public. Applicants are subject to an intense background investigation, including criminal history with fingerprints, driving record, and financial history. This may also include a medical exam, psychological exam, drug testing, and polygraph examination.

Auxiliary Program

In addition to our full-time sworn officers, we maintain an auxiliary force, which consists of four (4) officers. Auxiliary officers are OPOTA certified and must maintain the same levels of certification as full-time officers. Many come from differing backgrounds and have jobs outside this department. All are required to maintain their own duty weapon and gear, in addition to meeting the same levels of proficiency with their weapons and other tools as full-time officers. Auxiliary’s are required to donate a minimum number of hours per month to the division and are eligible to work special duty hours if available. Assisting in patrol, errands, and other duties, help keep full-time officers on the street serving the community.
